Info on Equipo Maize

(From the web site http://www.equipomaiz.org.sv/HisTodo.html with the help of online translation)

The Equipo Maize is a group of women and men who make popular pamphlets and books, and conduct educational days, workshops and actvities on different subjects. They seek to explain in simple form, subjects that affect the conditions of life of the great majorities. They offer methods to analyze the reality of the home, the group, the community, the country and the world, to understand that everything is related.  Their processes help people to form opinions so that every one decides what they want to do to change the reality of their home, group, community, country and of the world.

The Equipo Maize began work in popular education from 1983 in El Salvador. They arose in the middle of the war, from parishes of the periphery of San Salvador, to collaborate in the necessity of understanding what was happening in these years. Through the years, they have maintained their two fundamental areas of work, training and publications that emphasize issues and techniques.

The Equipo Maize works 5 subjects: Methodology of Popular Education, Sexuality and Gender, Economic Literacy, Management of risks (Understanding risks?), and Historical Memory.

From these 5 subjects, the Equipment Maize has developed the following collections of materials:

Sex education

Ecology

Historical memory

Popular education

Literacy

Methodology

Easy Economics

Posters and t-shirts

Economics step by step

Training Workshops have been developed in the five areas mentioned above.   These workshops may be consultations on an hour or two, a few hours in length, multiple days, or weekly sessions they refer to as “schools.”

The work is done in among groups in the popular sectors: marginal groups, cooperative women, young people, communities, educational groups, union, Base Communities, communal directors, etc.

The mode of work is to respond to a request of a community or an organized group in their place. The organization who asks for the services of the Equipo Maize summons the people which they will attend the event, elaborates the work schedule and looks for the premises where the training activity will be done.
