ANNOTATION |
UFE (United for a Fair Economy) is part of a long-term effort to build a mass grassroots movement against corporate globalization, and a short-term drive to support protest at the 1999 World Trade Organization Ministerial in Seattle, specifically against the proposed "Millennium Round." To be successful, UFE sees these campaigns in great need of massive public education, as well as a call to action. Thus, UFE has published a series of manuals and training guides seeking to facilitate the accomplishment of both these goals.
This is a very concise manual describing and explaining characteristics of the WTO with a variety of charts and graphs. Information displayed includes: "WTO Winners," "Financing the Global Economy," and "Who Makes the Rules?" Essentially, this manual illuminate the negative or unjust aspects and effects of the WTO on the global economy. It then offers "Signs of Hope," and highlights ways in which readers and activists may get involved for a change. There is a resource page with the contact information of organizations geared at global economic justice, as well as a copy of an article from the Sunday Independent, entitled "The Hidden Tentacles of the World's Most Secure Body."
This manual is part of a series of small booklets put out by United for a Fair Economy seeking to illuminate the dangers of unequal growth and power distribution as facilitated by economic globalization and trading bodies and agreements. There is also a "WTO for Beginners Training Guide" outlining a One-Hour UFE workshop covering the materials of this manual. |
